Characteristics

Shrubs, subshrubs or herbs, often with creeping stems rooting at the nodes. Leaves alternate, ±sessile, ±imbricate, ovate to lanceolate, obtuse or acute. Inflorescence a capitulum, terminal but sometimes the axis growing out. Flowers unisexual or bisexual. Perianth shortly cylindrical, 4-lobed, white, persistent in fruit, not circumscissile; corolla lobes scale-or gland-like, either 4 singly or in 4 pairs in throat of hypanthium opposite sepals. Stamens 4, inserted in throat of hypanthium alternate with sepals. Disc absent. Ovary 1-locular; style lataral; stigma capitate, papillose.
