Characteristics

Slender annuals, caespitose, bisexual. Leaves: ligule an unfringed membrane or rarely a fringed membrane (not in Australia); blade rolled in bud, linear-lanceolate. Inflorescences paniculate, ±ovoid (to cylindrical), dense, silky-white to pale rusty brown or greyish hairy and bristly. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, with 1 bisexual floret; rachilla prolonged beyond floret, with extension naked, hairy. Incomplete spikelets restricted to base of rachis, sterile (reduced to glumes), sessile to subsessile. Glumes 2, ±equal, long relative to adjacent lemmas, narrow, membranous (with firmer midnerve), tapering into a plumose awn, not keeled, 1-nerved, villous. Lemma incised, 3-awned, similar to or slightly firmer in texture than glumes, membranous, not keeled, 5-nerved; median awn dorsal. Stamens 3. Caryopsis: hilum short.
