Characteristics

Upper leaf surface glossy, glabrous except for the hispidulous midrib, midrib deeply impressed, lateral nerves faintly so, tertiary reticulation obscure; lower leaf surface mat, lamina with very sparse scattered hairs, midrib hispidulous; midrib and lateral nerves prominent, reticulation inconspicuous; lamina with irregularly scattered glandular dots, or these sometimes absent. Lateral nerves 7–9-paired.

Leaves coriaceous, characteristically yellowish-green; petiole 2–6 mm. long, pubescent; lamina 4·5–8·5 x 0·8–4 cm., elliptic, obovate-elliptic or oblong-elliptic, the apex cuspidate to a well-marked short to moderately long acumen with apex rounded to acute, the base cuneate to obtuse.
Corolla tube c. 8 mm. long, slender, inflated at the apex at level of stamens but the wall not thickened here, externally puberulent in the lower half; corolla lobes c. 11 mm. long, narrowly linear, minutely ciliate, otherwise glabrous.
Infloresences all axillary, flowers solitary or in few-flowered sessile fascicles, subtended by sepal-like bracts; flowers white, cream or lemon-yellow.
Calyx c. 2 mm. long, sepals united at base, oblong with truncate apiculate apex, ciliate, hispidulous along the midrib.
Fruit spherical, c. 2·5 cm. in diameter when ripe; immature fruit bright green with purple markings at the base.
Ovary c. 1·5 mm. long, narrowly conical, apically pubescent; style, clavuncle and stigma c. 5·5 mm. long.
Stamens inserted in the top 1/4 of the corolla tube, anthers c. 1·5 mm. long.
Suffrutex or climbing shrub up to 1 m. (or more?) high.
Young stems dark brown, hispid or pubescent.
