Corolla hypocrateriform, glabrous or variously hairy; tube ± cylindrical, slightly enlarged at level of anthers; lobes broadly elliptic to narrowly linear, contorted, overlapping to the left.
Style glabrous or pilose; clavuncle always positioned at level of base of anthers, of various shapes; stigma bifid but with the arms connivent.
Stamens inserted at various levels in the corolla tube; filaments very short; anthers dorsi-or basi-fixed, introrse, without carina.
Ovary glabrous or hairy, uni-or bilocular, placentation axile or parietal with very prominent placentae, ovules 8.
Cymes terminal and/or axillary, often grouped into terminal panicles, peduncle usually short.
Lianes, shrubs and suffrutices, tendrillous or rarely lacking tendrils (not in F.Z. area).
Fruit a many-seeded berry with or without sclerified pericarp; pulp sweet and acid.
Seeds endospermous, testa firmly united with the placental pulp.
Calyx lobes imbricate, free or shortly united at the base.
Latex present in all parts, often abundant.
Stipules absent.
Spines absent.
