Liana 5–30 m high; trunk up to 30 cm in diameter; branchlets tomentose or glabrous.. Leaves petiolate, blade obovate or elliptic, 6–26 cm long, 2.8–10.3 cm wide, obtuse to obtusely acuminate at the apex, acumen up to 1 cm long, rounded to acute at the base, glabrous; petiole 4–17 mm long, glabrous, sometimes with glands in the axil.. Inflorescence predominantly axillary, sometimes also terminal, 2.5–6.5 mm long, 3–45-flowered; peduncle 3–15 mm long, glabrous to tomentose; pedicels 2–8 mm long, glabrous to tomentose.. Flowers fragrant; sepals ovate, 1.4–3 mm long, rounded to obtuse at the apex; corolla white, creamy or yellow, often differently coloured on tube; tube 8–14 mm long; lobes 6.5–17.4 mm long, 2.5–4.3 mm wide, rounded at the apex; ovary glabrous to tomentose, ovules 50–180.. A tropical plant. It grows in closed lowland forests and also in mountain forest. In Nigeria it has been recorded at 1,440 m above sea level.
