Characteristics

Perennial herbs; stems erect or procumbent, usually branched; roots red-tipped. Leaves alternate, entire to pinnate. Capitula solitary, rarely in lax corymbs, terminal, radiate, heterogamous; phyllaries imbricate, 2–3-seriate; receptacle convex or flat, epaleate. Ray florets female, the ray white or pink, less often the outer florets tubular and hermaphroditic or female, rayless and yellow; disc florets hermaphroditic, yellow, the corolla tube spongy and swollen in fruit, especially beneath, with 5 lobes. Achenes homomorphic, oblong-cylindrical, usually 10-ribbed, with mucilaginous cells and secretory canals between the ribs; pappus a crown or an adaxial auricle, sometimes rudimentary or absent.
