Characteristics

Tall liane reaching 25–40 m.; trunk usually with smooth bark, finely marked with small lenticels, brownish grey, sometimes slightly rough, fissured and grey.. Latex absent; wood deeply furrowed (17–22 grooves, 2–5 mm. deep on wood of 2–3.2 cm. diameter); upper internodes brownish-puberulous.. Stipules not attached to a transverse flange-like structure.. Leaves with a petiole 6–12 mm. long, reddish-puberulent; blade papery to subcoriaceous, elliptic to slightly obovate 2–11 cm. long, 1–6 cm. wide, acuminate, cuneate to rounded at base, greyish, brownish or rust-coloured on drying, margin shallowly crenulate, secondary veins in 5–8 pairs.. Inflorescence greyish or brownish pubescent, consisting of condensed many-flowered cymes ± 1–4 cm. long, sometimes grouped into terminal panicles; pedicels 2–4 mm. long.. Buds conical, acute or subacute, reddish pubescent, 3–4 mm. long.. Flowers whitish, pale greyish green or yellowish white, 7–8 mm. in diameter.. Sepals ovate, ± 1 mm. long.. Petals 3–4 mm. long, 1.3–1.5 mm. wide, acute, puberulent with a median strip of longer hairs on the outside and a glabrous patch at the base of the internal face.. Disc a wide but shallow cup ± 2 mm. in diameter, surrounding a very short androgynophore.. Stamens 3 with puberulent filaments; anthers ± 0.6 mm. wide, subapically dehiscent.. Ovary pyramidal, pubescent on the upper part of the locules which are semi-immersed in the androgynophore; ovules (2–)4(–6) in each locule; stigma punctiform.. Mericarps ovoid-oblong, 5.5–6.5 cm. long, 2.5–3.2 cm. wide, brownish; interior smooth, reddish brown..
