Characteristics

Spikelets 3–7-flowered, subsessile, strongly laterally compressed, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lowermost florets, the lowermost 1–3 florets fertile, the rest sterile and progressively reduced to a tuft of awns; glumes slightly unequal, linear, membranous, 1-nerved, strongly keeled, the inferior shorter than or slightly exceeding the lowermost lemma, the superior exceeding the florets; fertile lemmas thinly membranous, 3-nerved, pilose on the back or only on the margins and keel, acutely 2-lobed at the apex, awned from between the lobes; sterile lemmas usually not lobed, tapering to the awn or reduced to just the awn.
