Characteristics

Plants 10--40 cm tall. Stolons short. Stems ca. 0.5 mm in diam. Basal leaves several; leaf blade linear-lanceolate to linear, 5--12 cm × 2--5 mm, margin long pilose especially near juncture with leaf sheath, apex obtuse and with a thick callus. Cauline leaves 2 or 3, smaller than basal ones. Inflorescence an umbel-like or corymbose cyme, lax, 8--18-flowered; basal involucral bract ovate to lanceolate, 1--5 cm, margin ciliate. Flower solitary; pedicel thin, with a bract at base; bracteoles ovate, 1.5--2 × ca. 1.2 mm, margin ciliate or sometimes lacerate. Perianth segments ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 2.5--3 × 1--1.3 mm, subequal, center reddish brown, margin hyaline, apex acuminate or long acuminate. Filaments 0.6--0.9 mm; anthers 1--1.3 mm. Style ca. 0.9 mm; stigmas ca. 2 mm. Capsule straw-colored, trigonous ovoid, 2.8--5 mm, apex mucronate. Seeds dark reddish, ovoid to ellipsoid, ca. 1.1 mm; appendage yellowish, ca. 1 mm. Fl. May--Jun, fr. Jun--Jul.

Leaves: sheaths reddish, throats pilose; blade sparsely pubescent; basal leaves 6--10 cm x 2--5 mm; cauline leaves 2--3, to 4(--6) cm x 1--2.5 mm. Inflorescences simple or rarely branching; proximal inflorescence bract to 1/2 length of inflorescence; bracts brown, apex truncate, glabrous; bracteoles ovate, 1/2 length of tepals; pedicels spreading, 1--4 cm. Flowers: tepals brown, 1.6--2.5 mm, margins entire, clear; anthers 2 times filament length; stigmas 2 times style length. Capsules straw-colored, sometimes reddish, equal to or exceeding tepals; beak a mucro. Seeds dark brown to black, 1.4 mm; caruncle erect to slightly curved, 2/3 length of seed body. 2n = 52 (Japan).
