Characteristics

Lianas, undershrubs or herbs, lacticiferous. Leaves opposite or verticillate, glandular at the base of the midrib or along its-entire length, rarely non-glandular, pinnately-nerved; petioles somewhat perfoliate, glandular in the axils. Inflores-cences racemose, rarely obscurely compound, mostly axillary. Flowers medium-sized; bracteoles present; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes equal to subequal, bearing 1 to many alternate, opposite, or indefinitely distributed squamellae within; co-rolla infundibuliform, salverform, or tubular-salverform, without appendages, the tube straight or ? gibbous, the limb 5-lobed, dextrorsely convolute; stamens 5, + included, or half-exserted, the anthers connivent and agglutinated to the stigma, with an enlarged connective characterized by a pedestal-like projection; gynoecium 2-carpellate, apocarpous, the ovary superior, the ovules numerous, the nectaries 2-5, rarely absent, separate or ? united basally, the style 1, the stigma pentagonal-umbraculiform. Fruit apocarpous, of 2 follicles, continuous to monil-iform; seeds numerous, dry, truncate, comose apically.

Climbers, evergreen or deciduous; latex white. Stems without spines. Leaves opposite or whorled, petiolate; lamina entire, usually chartaceous, usually glabrous; colleters often present in a cluster at base of midvein. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary, pedunculate raceme. Flowers pedicellate, fragrant. Calyx lobes narrow, with a cluster of colleters inside at base. Corolla funnel-shaped; tube cylindrical, narrowed towards base, usually bearded inside below insertion of filaments, without scales; lobes asymmetric, nearly as long as tube, contorted and dextrorse in bud. Corolline corona absent. Stamens enclosed in corolla tube, inserted below middle of tube; filaments short, curved, bearded inside; anthers linear or oblong, fertile only in upper half, connivent around style-head and adherent to it. Nectariferous disc present, of 5 fleshy, basally fused segments. Style-head 5-lobed below a narrow, bifid tip. Carpels free except for the style. Follicles 2, slender, curved and fused at tips. Seeds numerous, not winged, comose.
Lianas usually glabrous, with latex. Leaves opposite; stipules interpetiolar, reduced to many linear segments. Racemes axillary, few flowered. Flowers large. Calyx deeply divided, with many basal glands inside. Corolla funnelform; tube narrow, more than 2 cm, limb campanulate; faucal scales absent; lobes overlapping to right. Stamens inserted and included in widened part of corolla tube; filaments short; anthers oblong, adherent at middle to pistil head, cells obtusely caudate; disc 5-cleft. Ovaries free, glabrous; ovules numerous. Style glabrous; pistil head with a 2-cleft mucro. Follicles long, slender. Seeds narrowly oblong, not beaked, comose.
