Terrestrial ferns. Rhizome short-to long-creeping. Fronds often large, 1-pinnate (not in Australia) to 4-pinnate. Veins free. Scales absent; hairs usually present on fronds and rhizomes. Sori round or ovate, submarginal, sometimes on a slightly raised receptacle, terminating the veins, sometimes with paraphyses; protected by a half-cup-shaped indusium attached by its base and sides, or rarely cup-shaped (not in Australia). Spores trilete, ± smooth or finely echinate, and usually 3-lobed.
Sori distinctly superficial, each at the end of a single vein and protected by an indusium which is pocket-shaped (attached by base and sides), opening towards margin.
