Characteristics

Rhizome short-to long-creeping, not dorsiventrally flattened, sparsely scaly. Fronds to c. 150 cm long, c. 1 cm or more apart. Stipe c. 5 (–40) cm long. Lamina ± intermediate in form between M. punctatum and M. grossum, 90–140 cm long, 20–40 cm wide, irregularly but deeply lobed near base; lobes reduced to irregular crenations towards apex of lamina. Sori 0.5–1.5 mm diam., round to ± linear, scattered over lower surface of frond, sometimes confined to distal half, slightly impressed into lamina, but (in Qld specimens) rarely visible as an indistinct mark on upper surface. Spores apparently not or only poorly formed.
