Culms 4.5–20 cm high, 1–2-noded; mid-culm nodes exposed. Leaves scattered along culms; ligule 1–2 mm long, entire or dentate, obtuse; blade 1.5–2 cm long, 1 mm wide, hooded, shallowly grooved, adaxially minutely puberulous. Panicles 1.2–4.3 cm long; primary branches filiform. Spikelets 1.5–2 mm long. Glumes: lower glume 1.3–1.5 mm long, 1-nerved; upper glume narrowly elliptic, 1.3–1.7 mm long, 1–3-nerved, with lateral nerves short and obscure. Callus hirsute, with hairs to 0.2 mm long. Lemma narrowly oblong to narrowly elliptic, 1.4–1.6 mm long, obtuse or truncate, muticous, similar in firmness to glumes, prominently 5-nerved, with nerves scaberulous and intercostal regions glabrous. Palea slightly shorter than lemma. Anthers 0.2–0.3 mm long.
Grows in dry, open habitats, often on sand and toleratingsomewhat saline conditions, commonly a weed of pasture or disturbed woodland.
