Characteristics

Annuals, caespitose or culms solitary, bisexual. Ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescences paniculate, more or less pyramidal, open. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, with 2 bisexual florets; rachilla distinctly elongated between florets, terminated by upper floret. Glumes 2, ±equal, shorter than adjacent lemma, awnless, 1–3-nerved. Lemmas awnless or with 1 straight dorsal awn, hyaline and less firm than glumes or similar in texture to glumes, dorsally rounded, 3–7-nerved. Palea tightly clasped by lemma. Stamens 3. Caryopsis slightly adhering to lemma and/or palea, narrowly ellipsoid, longitudinally grooved or flattened on one face; hilum short.
