Characteristics

Clambering or scrambling perennials growing into and over surrounding vegetation, with pachymorph rhizomes. Culms woody and persistent, with 1 primary and 1 or 2 subdominant branches per mid-culm node. Leaves: ligule an unfringed membrane; blade rolled in bud, pseudopetiolate, cross-veined. Inflorescences indeterminate, with pseudospikelets in clusters of few to more than 10. Pseudospikelets disarticulating below lemmas, with 4–9 bisexual florets, with 1 terminal sterile floret. Glumes 1 or 2. Sterile florets resembling bisexual but underdeveloped. Bisexual florets: lemma short-pointed, dorsally rounded, 7–9-nerved; stamens 4; ovary without conspicuous apical appendage; stigmas 1 or 2. Fruit not known.
