Characteristics

Plants initially caespitose but becoming clambering and vine-like. Culms reaching great lengths and to 30 m height in trees, to 3 cm diam.; mid-culm internodes hollow, pilose with antrorse hairs. Leaves non-auriculate; basal sheath sparsely pubescent; ligule entire; blade lanceolate, to 30 cm long, to 6 cm wide, cross-veined, glabrous; adaxial blade surface shallowly grooved. Pseudospikelets 5–6 (–12) mm long; rachilla segments broad and flattened, 0.5 mm long, glabrous. Glumes 2: lower glume 2.5–3.5 mm long, 9-nerved; upper glume 3–4.5 mm long, 9–11-nerved. Bisexual florets: lemma ovate, 3–5.5 mm long, obtuse, keeled, 7–9 (–11)-nerved with nerves connected by obscure transverse veins, sparsely hairy on inner surface and apically; palea oblong or oblanceolate, 2.5–5 mm long, obtuse, 7-nerved (2 nerves on each flap, 2 keels and 1 nerve between keels); anthers 2–2.5 mm long.
