Characteristics

Perennial monoecious tangled aquatic herb. Stems 10–50 cm long. Leaves: submerged leaves in whorls of 3 or 4, ovate to orbicular, pectinate, with 6–9 pinnae, lamina 5 mm long; emergent leaves similar or pinnae reduced to long teeth. Bracteoles ovate, 0.5–0.7 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, solitary. Male flowers: sepals deltoid to ovate, 0.4–0.5 mm long; petals 2.9–3.5 mm long, persistent, red to yellow; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles linear, becoming reflexed; stigmas white. Fruit cubiform, reddish purple; mericarps ovoid, truncate, 0.8–0.9 mm long, sparsely papillose.
