Characteristics

Marsh or semi-aquatic mat-forming monoecious herb. Stems to 7 cm tall. Leaves opposite, oblanceolate to obovate, subfleshy, entire with a terminal gland; lamina 7–10 mm long. Bracteoles linear to lanceolate, rarely almost ovate, 0.7–0.8 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, solitary. Male flowers sessile, rarely on pedicel to 0.5 mm long; sepals oblanceolate or lanceolate to obovate or ovate, 0.8–1 mm long; petals 1.8–2.5 mm long, persistent, red; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile; sepals deltoid, 0.4 mm long, persistent; petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles cylindrical, becoming reflexed; stigmas red, fading. Fruit sessile, deep purplish black; mericarps ovoid to lachrymiform, 1.1–1.2 mm long including style, sparsely verrucose-papillose.
