Characteristics

Semi-aquatic monoecious mat-like annual herb. Stems divaricately branched, mainly leafless. Leaves clustered at stem tip, imbricate, decussate, rhomboid to ovate or obovate, acute to obtuse, entire; lamina 8–9 mm long. Bracteoles linear, 1.7 mm long in male flowers, 3.4 mm long in females. Flowers 4-merous, solitary. Male flowers: pedicel 0.7–0.8 mm long; sepals absent; petals 3.5–4.5 mm long, deciduous; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile; sepals linear, 0.5 mm long; petals vestigial; ovary 4-locular; styles clavate; stigmas minutely fimbriate, red. Fruit developing from 2 (rarely 1) carpels, ovate to oblong, ±flattened, 5–6.5 mm long, sepals and petals persistent; mericarps tardily separating, wrinkled, weakly keeled.
