Characteristics

Erect monoecious annual herb 2–4 cm tall. Leaves alternate, linear to linear-lanceolate, entire; lamina 2.5–4 mm long; rarely the lowermost, if submerged, subulate, trifid or pectinate, with up to 5 pinnae. Bracteoles (female flowers only) linear-deltoid, 0.2 mm long. Flowers 4-merous. Male flowers on urceolate torus or pedicel 0.2–0.3 mm long, in a cluster of c. 3 at stem tip; sepals absent; petals 0.4–0.5 mm long, cream to red; stamens 4. Female flowers sessile, solitary; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; stigmas sessile, white. Fruit globular, red-brown to purple; mericarps ovoid, 0.5–0.6 mm long, oblique apically, densely papillose.
