Characteristics

Prostrate monoecious mat-forming terrestrial herb to 15 cm tall. Leaves alternate, linear, entire or with 2 or 3 short blunt teeth (rarely lowermost leaves pectinate); lamina 4–10 mm long. Bracteoles lanceolate, 0.6–0.7 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, in fascicles of 1–4, each axil bearing 1 male and up to 3 female flowers, but in upper axils the female and in lower male vestigial. Male flowers sessile; sepals absent; petals 2.2–2.8 mm long, persistent, red, cream or white; stamens 8. Female flowers: pedicel 0.1 mm long; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; stigmas almost sessile, red. Fruit cubiform, deep reddish purple; mericarps cylindrical, 0.7–0.8 mm long, obliquely truncate, almost smooth to densely papillose-verrucose.
