Characteristics

Aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial herb, monoecious, sometimes dioecious. Stems 10–20 cm tall. Leaves alternate, either all lanceolate to ovate, pectinate, with up to 7 pinnae, or all linear to lanceolate, the lowermost toothed, the uppermost entire. Bracteoles linear to ovate, 0.3–0.6 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, solitary. Male flowers sessile; sepals linear-lanceolate, 0.4–0.5 mm long, erose; petals 2–2.4 mm long, yellowish with red tip; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile or on pedicel 0.1 mm long; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles elongating and reflexing; stigmas white. Fruit cubiform, yellow-brown to reddish brown; mericarps cylindrical, 0.5–0.7 mm long, often with a apical rim, smooth, or papillose in lower half.
