Decumbent monoecious annual herb. Main stems to 12 cm long, prostrate; branchlets 2–4 cm tall. Leaves alternate; submerged leaves ovate, pectinate, with 4–6 pinnae, lamina 12 mm long; in emergent plants, lower leaves trifid or linear-filiform; upper leaves linear-lanceolate; lamina entire, curved, 2.5–3.5 mm long. Bracteoles (female flowers only) deltoid, 0.2 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, males in terminal cluster of 3 or 4, females solitary. Male flowers: pedicel 0.2 mm long; sepals absent; petals oblong to obovate, 0.6 mm long, yellow; stamens 4. Female flowers sessile; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; stigmas sessile, yellow. Fruit globular, olive to reddish; mericarps ovoid, 0.75–1 mm long, tapering to oblique apex, smooth or minutely granular.
