Characteristics

Monoecious marsh to semi-aquatic mat-forming perennial herb. Stem tips erect, 2–3 cm tall. Leaves opposite, linear, with a terminal gland; lamina c. 2.5–3 mm long. Bracteoles oblong to oblanceolate, of male flowers 1.2–1.8 mm long; of females 0.5–0.7 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, solitary; different sexes on same or different branches. Male flowers: pedicel to 10 mm long; sepals absent or 1–4, vestigial, filiform, caducous; petals 1.7–2 mm long, persistent, red; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; stigmas almost sessile, reflexed, white. Fruit cubiform to cylindrical, red to yellowish brown; mericarps cylindrical, 0.6–0.8 mm long, truncate, with a light coloured irregular longitudinal dorsal crest and 2 similar but smaller lateral crests.
