Characteristics

Slender monoecious aquatic herb. Stems to 60 cm long. Leaves dcussate, lowermost rarely in 3s, uppermost sometimes alternate, orbicular, pectinate, with 12–16 pinnae; lamina 5.8–11 mm long. Bracteoles of male flowers ovate to orbicular, 1.3 mm long, apiculate, white; of female flowers similar, 0.4 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, the male solitary, terminal enclosed in hooded bract, and 2–4 naked female flowers below. Male flowers on torus 0.4–1 mm long; sepals vestigial; petals 2.1–2.2 mm long, deciduous, red; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles lachrymiform, creamy yellow; stigmas non-fimbriate. Fruit cylindrical, silvery grey to reddish; mericarps cylindrical, c. 1.7–1.8 mm long, truncate, smooth.
