Characteristics

Annual monoecious or dioecious aquatic herb. Stems weak, 15–30 cm long. Leaves alternate, linear to oblanceolate, acute to obtuse, entire; lamina 6–7 mm long. Bracteoles lanceolate, slightly hooded, acute, hyaline, of male flowers 0.7 mm long; of females 0.4 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, sessile, solitary. Male flowers: sepals absent; petals 2.9–3 mm long, persistent, white; stamens 8. Female flowers: sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles clavate, erect; stigmas pale. Fruit sessile, shortly cylindrical, yellow-brown to red-brown; mericarps cylindrical, 1.3–1.7 mm long, truncate, dorsally minutely papillose in ±vertical rows.
