Characteristics

Annual monoecious aquatic herb. Stems 25–40 cm long, emergent parts sparingly branched. Leaves: submerged leaves in whorls of 4 or 5, broadly ovate, pectinate, with 10–18 filiform pinnae, lamina 11–16 mm long; emergent leaves in whorls of 3–5, oblanceolate, glaucous, with 2–6 spreading lobes at base, lamina 5–6 mm long. Bracteoles linear, 0.8–1.6 mm long, entire or weakly toothed, cream. Flowers 4-merous, sessile, solitary. Male flowers: sepals orbicular, 0.1 mm long; petals 1.4–1.5 mm long, caducous, yellow, tinted red; stamens 8. Female flowers: sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles clavate to conical; stigmas smooth, non-fimbriate, red. Fruit shortly cylindrical, greenish brown to reddish; mericarps cylindrical, 1.8–2.1 mm long, irregularly verrucose.
