Characteristics

Moderately robust monoecious aquatic herb. Stems to 60 cm long. Leaves: submerged leaves scattered or in whorls of 4 or 5, ovate to obovate, pectinate, with 14–24 pinnae, lamina 15–30 mm long; emergent leaves alternate, linear, entire, somewhat fleshy, lamina 5–8 mm long. Bracteoles oblong, 0.3–0.6 mm long, margins with gland-like hydathodes. Flowers 4-merous, solitary. Male flowers sessile, later on pedicel to 1 mm long; sepals absent; petals 2.4 mm long, persistent, reddish; stamens 8. Female flowers sessile; sepals and petals absent; ovary 4-locular; styles clavate; stigmas white. Fruit cubiform, green to reddish; mericarps cylindrical, 1 mm long, tapering to oblique slightly flared apex, papillose.
