Tree to 9 m high; wood light and brittle; bark corky, white. Leaves simple, clustered towards ends of branches, in whorls of 3 (or 4); lamina ovate to broadly elliptic, 7–20 cm long, 4.5–10 cm wide, basally acute to ± rounded, often slightly recurved at margins, very shallowly and bluntly denticulate with teeth small or imperceptible, obtuse to acute and slightly apiculate at apex, upper surface dark glossy green, pale green and raised veins below, sparsely pubescent (softly below, rough pubescence above). Inflorescence axillary, cymose, usually 3-flowered. Flowers to c. 27 mm long and 18 mm across. Calyx cup-shaped, 5-lobed, 3–5 mm long, with linear-filiform lobes (appearing like 5 ± filiform teeth), pubescent. Corolla ± 2-lipped, somewhat waxy-fleshy, yellow to orange with orange-red spots inside lobes and tube, pubescent; tube c. 20 mm long, slightly curved; lobes reflexed at anthesis, with 3 lower lobes 10–13 mm long, and upper pair 5–6 mm long. Stamens 4, exserted; filaments c. 17 mm long, ± reflexed. Ovary superior, conical-ovoid, slightly curved, basally surrounded by shallow disc. Capsule ovoid, c. 15 mm long, beaked (style remaining), black, with 2 compartments (Hutton 1986), ?dehiscing by four valves (Weber & Skog 2007); seeds numerous, minute.
Maintain areas, including montane rainforest. Grows in sheltered forests at higher elevations in the mountains, and in sheltered valleys lower down (Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW) 2007: 191).
