Herbs, mostly branched. Leaves sessile. Flowers axillary, solitary, 4-merous; calyx tube coriaceous, rigid, 8-ribbed, calyx lobes 4, valvate, with transverse secondary veins; corolla funnel-shaped, 4-lobed; stamens 4, sometimes slightly didynamous, anthers ellipsoid; pollen in monads; style with tendency to heterostyly, stigma 2-lobed. Fruit a capsule, not longer than calyx tube, with 2 flat valves, which open widely; seeds reticulate.
Stamens 4; filaments inserted below the middle of the corolla tube, filiform, slightly unequal; anthers oblong-ellipsoid, not twisted.
Flowers 4-merous, axillary, in long or short racemes or crowded in terminal corymb-like clusters, rarely solitary.
Basal leaves elliptic; stem leaves from elliptic-ovate (lower) to linear or linear-lanceolate (upper).
Ovary oblong-ovoid, unilocular; ovules numerous; style filiform; stigma bilobed.
Corolla tube cylindric or narrowly funnel-shaped, with 4-ovate lobes.
Stems erect, slender, simple or branched at the apex.
Calyx leathery, tubular, 8–12 ribbed; lobes 3-nerved.
Capsule membranous, oblong-obovoid, bivalved.
Annual or perennial herbs.
