Characteristics

Annual or perennial herb. Stem 4-angled. Leaves opposite, the basal ones differing from the cauline ones. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, few-to many-flowered cymes (rarely uniflowered cymes). Flowers 4-merous, sessile. Calyx tubular, 8–12 ribbed; lobes 3-nerved. Corolla tube cylindric or funnel-shaped; lobes ovate. Filaments inserted on the corolla tube, filiform, slightly unequal; anthers oblong-ellipsoid. Ovary oblong-ovoid, unilocular; ovules numerous; style filiform; stigma bilobed. Capsule bivalved, membranous. Seed surface reticulate-pitted.
