Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Pachycarpus

Characteristics

Tuberous-rooted perennial, tuber 70-100 mm long, carrot-like. Stem 150-600 mm tall, slender, erect, simple or branched at the base, occasionally two or more stems arising from the tuber, puberulous to harshly pubescent. Leaves erectly spreading; petiole 2-5 mm long; blade 64-165 x 2.0-9.5 mm, very narrowly linear to lanceolate, margins revolute, puberulous to densely pubescent or ± scabrous towards the margin above, glabrous or rarely puberulous but scabrous along the midrib below. Inflorescence a solitary terminal umbel, rarely two, then the second at the uppermost node, 3-14-flowered, pedunculate; peduncles 20-70 mm long, pubescent. Bracts 10-15 mm long, linear or linear-lanceolate, apex acute-acuminate, glabrous above, pubescent below, deciduous. Pedicels 12-50 mm long, pubescent. Sepals 10-15 mm long, lanceolate or rarely narrowly ovate, apex acute or acutely acuminate, glabrous above, coarsely pubescent below. Corolla 10-50 mm long, globose or globose-campanulate, lobed in the upper half or less, pale green or dull cream-green becoming cream-brown in older flowers, glabrous above, densely pubescent below; lobes 5-24 x 7-27 mm, broadly ovate to suborbicular, apex obtuse and slightly incurved or recurved-spreading, margins imbricate below. Corona lobes 2.5-4.5 mm long, horizontally spreading, linear or linear-lanceolate, apex acute or ± obtuse, rarely retuse, with a pair of obliquely deltoid or subrhomboid wing-like keels at the base, keels 1.0-4.5 mm high and 0.5-6.5 mm long, usually 1/4 the length of the lobe or rarely extended to the apex of the lobe so that the lobe appears ± boat-shaped, corona dark purple with pale yellow-cream keels. Anther wings 1.5-3.0 mm long, vertical with straight outer edge; appendages 3-4 mm long, brown, very prominent, oblong with slightly reflexed sides, tips obtuse, exceeding and inflexed over the margin of the style apex. Style apex 5-crenate and crater-like. Follicles fleshy, very narrowly ovoid, apex acute.
