Characteristics

Climber to 20 m with twining stems; young shoots rusty-tomentose; latex clear. Leaves usually softly densely pubescent with brownish hairs; petiole 10–43 mm long, densely pubescent; lamina broadly elliptic to ovate, 7–15 cm long, 4–9 cm wide, usually cordate to rounded-truncate at base, shortly acuminate; secondary veins 6–9 pairs, raised below, often with small domatia at junction with midvein. Inflorescence of axillary and terminal, large, dense, many-flowered panicles; axes brown-pubescent; sessile or pedicels to 2 mm long. Calyx lobes spreading, 2–2.5 mm long, rusty-hirsute. Corolla cream to brownish, externally rusty-hirsute throughout; tube c. 3 mm long with ring of retrorse hairs at throat; lobes thick, spreading, recurved, ovate-lanceolate, 2.1–3.3 mm long, papillose internally except on the thin, smooth margin, with an ascending beard of inwardly directed hairs at base. Anther cone 1.8–2.4 mm long, almost or fully enclosed; filaments short, straight, with several, short, deltoid bristles; anther tails divergent. Nectary scales free, fleshy, narrow, 1.4 mm long, 0.3 mm wide. Capsules narrowly deltoid, 5–12 cm long, 1.4–2.1 cm diam., with a short, dense, bristly tomentum of rusty hairs.
