Characteristics

Climber to 4 m high with slender, twining stems; young stems pubescent; latex watery, yellowish. Juvenile leaves linear-lanceolate. Adult leaves thin, soft; petiole 7–12 mm long; lamina oblong-lanceolate, 3.5–11 cm long, 1–2.5 cm wide, rounded, truncate or subcordate at base, sometimes toothed near base, narrowly acuminate at apex; upper surface dull, scabrous-hairy to glabrous; lower surface paler, softly pubescent, with hairs colourless; veins including coarser net veins distinct below. Inflorescence of axillary or terminal, open cymes to 4.5 cm long; axes pubescent; pedicels 3–4 mm long. Calyx lobes deltoid or ovate, 0.8–1.7 mm long, pubescent outside. Corolla cream; tube c. 2–2.5 mm long, cylindrical; lobes spreading, oblong-ovate, c. 4 mm long, recurved apically, sparsely hairy externally, bearded internally near base. Anther cone 3 mm long, half-exserted; filaments not twisted; anthers each with a raised crest; anther tails divergent. Nectary scales free, oblong, 0.9 mm long, ± truncate. Capsule slender, narrowly cylindrical to fusiform, 4–9 cm long, 0.5–1 cm diam., pubescent or glabrescent.

Environment

Grows commonly in Nothofagus moorei cool-temperate rainforest, also in cool subtropical rainforest, at altitudes of c. 700–1200 m. Occurs on plateaus and escarpments, often in basalt-derived soil.
