Genus

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae

Characteristics

Trees, unarmed. Leaves bipinnate, deciduous. Stipules lobed or branched, often persistent at anthesis, or small and caducous. Leaflets small, numerous, opposite, Inflorescences terminal and/or axillary, simple racemose or paniculate; bracts present, sometimes caducous; bracteoles lacking. Flowers hermaphrodite, showy. Hypanthium very short or obscure. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Petals 5, yellow, more or less equal, imbricate, spreading. Stamens 10, free; filaments thickened and pilose at the basal part; anthers uniform, dorsifixed, longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary sessile or substipitate, 3-8-ovuled; style filiform, incurved; stigma prominent, peltate or capitate. Pods oblong, hard, compressed, indehiscent, with a firm, wing-like extension on each suture, usually longitudinally striate, 1-6-seeded. Seeds lenticular, compressed, exalbuminous.
More
Unarmed trees. Leaves bipinnate, without specialised glands on the petiole and rachis, with up to 21 pairs of pinnae; stipules deciduous; leaflets numerous, opposite. Inflorescence racemose; racemes often ±aggregated and paniculate; bracts usually linear-lanceolate, deciduous. Flowers bisexual. Calyx tube short; lobes 5, imbricate, subequal, longer than the tube. Petals 5, subequal, with upper one often shorter than the others, ±spathulate, strongly imbricate. Stamens 10, declinate; filaments free, conspicuously brown-villous basally, glabrous above; anthers dorsifixed. Ovary sessile or subsessile; style filiform, pubescent basally, glabrous above; stigma broadly peltate. Pod elliptic to oblong, flattened, with a distinct wing along each margin, indehiscent. Seeds strongly compressed, elongated longitudinally within the pod.
Trees, deciduous, unarmed. Leaves abruptly bipinnate; pinnae opposite; leaflets numerous, sessile. Inflorescences panicles or racemes, axillary or terminal; bracts caducous or persistent, small; bracteoles absent. Flowers hermaphroditic, yellow; receptacle short. Sepals 5, subequal. Petals 5, as sepals imbricate. Stamens 10, free; filaments slightly exserted, with pilose tuft at bases; anthers oblong, dorsifixed. Ovary sessile, free from receptacle, 2-or more ovuled; style filiform, long, or discoid; stigma broadly peltate, capitate, or discoid, large. Legume compressed, lanceolate-oblong, rarely elongated, indehiscent, veined at middle, with broad wing on each suture. Seeds 2-8, compressed, without endosperm.
narmed spreading trees. Leaves twice-pinnate; petiole and rachis eglandular; stipules small, caducous; pinnae several; ultimate leaflets numerous, relatively small. Inflorescence terminal, of few to several racemes. Flowers yellow; calyx-tube short, patelliform; calyx-lobes 5, imbricate, subequal; petals 5, spreading, subequal; stamens 10, inserted with petals on calyx-tube, similar; filaments free, pubescent basally; anthers versatile, longitudinally dehiscent, ovary free, usually stipitate; style elongate; stigma expanded, peltate. Legume indehiscent, winged on both margins, few-seeded.
Pods 4–12 cm long, oblong to narrowly elliptic, not conspicuously pubescent, strongly compressed, with distinct wings 3–6 mm broad along each margin, indehiscent; seeds 1 to few, oblong or discoid, strongly compressed, elongated longitudinally within the pod.
Stamens 10, not exceeding the petals; filaments glabrous in the upper part but the broader basal part conspicuously brown-villous; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits.
is a genus of trees rather closely related to Bussea (p. 25), with similar yellow flowers and a peltate stigma, but with a flattened indehiscent pod winged along both sutures.
Petals somewhat unequal, the upper one shorter than the others, all ± spathulate with brown pubescence on the outside of the claw and extending up the middle of the blade.
Leaves alternate, bipinnate, without specialised glands; pinnae up to 21 pairs; leaflets up to 32 pairs per pinna, usually oblong; stipules caducous.
Sepals appearing separate but actually joined by a very short tube [see note], imbricate with scarious margins, usually reflexed in flower.
Ovary subsessile, brown-pubescent or-tomentose; style pubescent in lower part, gradually becoming glabrous distally; stigma peltate.
Flowers in terminal and lateral racemes often aggregated to form a pseudopanicle; bracts usually linear-lanceolate, caducous.
Young shoots and inflorescences covered with brown indumentum and sometimes scattered stalked, swollen-headed glands.
Receptacle comprising a lower narrow part simulating the pedicel and an upper broad shallow disc.
Small to medium trees, unarmed.
