Tufted perennial 400-500 mm high; stolons present or absent; basal sheaths white, shiny, persistent; leaves basal; glands absent. Leaf blade to 300 x to 4 mm, expanded, rigid, glabrous; margins thickened; sheath mouth glabrous or woolly (only hairy when sheaths hairy). Inflorescence contracted, 40-90 x 20-50 mm, with ±100 spikelets; pedicels hidden by spikelets, scaberulous; axils glabrous. Spikelet 8-15 mm long (includes glume awn), ivory-coloured; glumes acuminate to awned, scaberulous all over or only along keel; lemma 3-4 mm long, hairy along nerves, hairs 0.3-0.7 mm long; lateral awns 4-7 mm long, not reaching to reaching glume apices; central awn 10-17 mm long; palea hairy; anthers 2.0-2.3 mm long.
