Perennials or, less commonly, annuals, usually caespitose, bisexual. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescences paniculate; branches often with glands. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, with 2 bisexual florets, disarticulating between florets; rachilla prolonged beyond bisexual florets as a minute bristle, or with a rudimentary third floret. Glumes 2, ±equal, awnless, carinate, 1-nerved above base. Callus hairy. Lemma 2-lobed, with a geniculate awn from sinus, with an additional straight setum arising from base of (and partially fused to) each lobe, dorsally rounded, 5–7-nerved. Palea relatively short with weakly developed keels which do not reach the apex. Hilum short, linear-oblong.
