Tufted perennial 200-300 mm high; basal sheath brown, soon rotting away; leaves cauline; glands absent. Leaf blade to 80 x to 0.5 mm, rolled, rigid, glabrous; margins smooth; sheath mouth glabrous. Inflorescence contracted, 30-50 x 10-30 mm, with ±100 spikelets; pedicels hidden by spikelets, glabrous; nodes hairy. Spike-let 5-6 mm long; glumes acuminate, hyaline, glabrous or scaberulous along keels; lemma 2 mm long, hairy all over; lobes extended into 1-6 awns; lateral awns 6-10 mm long, extending up to and beyond glumes apices; central awn 10-15 mm long; palea glabrous, awned; anthers 1.5-2.1 mm long.
Perennial to 30 cm. Leaves basal, linear. Spikelets 5-6 mm long, in a dense panicle, lemmas 5-9-awned.
