Leaf blade to 400 x to 2.5 mm, rolled, rarely expanded, rigid, glabrous; margins smooth; sheath upper part and mouth woolly hairy. Inflorescence contracted, 50-150 x 20-35 mm, with ±100 spikelets; pedicels glabrous, hairy or scaberulous; axils hairy. Spikelet 8-12 mm long; glumes acuminate, glabrous; lemma 3.5-4.5 mm long, hairy all over; lateral awns 4-6 mm long, extending up to glume apices; central awn 10-17 mm; palea hairy between keels; anthers 2.7-3.5 mm long.
Perennial, up to 0.9 m tall, in dense tussocks, eglandular. Leaves linear, rigid, usually rolled, sheath and sheath mouth woolly; ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescence an open panicle, 50-100 mm long. Spikelets 8-12 mm long, 2-flowered, both bisexual; glumes ± equal, as long as spikelet (excluding awns), 1-nerved; lemma hairy, lobe awns not exserted, central awn 10-17 mm long, basally twisted; anthers 2.7-3.5 mm long.
Perennial to 90 cm, in dense tussocks. Leaves basal, linear, rigid, usually rolled, sheaths and sheath mouth woolly. Spikelets 8-12 mm long, in a lax, open panicle, lemmas awned.
