Densely to loosely tufted biennial or perennial 150-400 mm high; basal sheaths white, shiny, persistent; leaves basal; stalked, crateriform glands on leaves, pedicels and glumes or absent. Leaf blade 120-200 x 1-5 mm, expanded or rarely rolled, glabrous or hairy; margins smooth; sheath mouth glabrous or with a ring of bristles. Inflorescence open or contracted, 20-80 x 10-70 mm; with 30100 spikelets; pedicels not hidden by spikelets; axils hairy. Spikelet 3-5 mm long; glumes acuminate, straw to purple-coloured, scaberulous all over or only along keels; lemma 2.0-2.5 mm long, hairy basally and along keel and margins; lateral awns 2 mm long, exserted from glumes; central awn 6-7 mm long, erect, geniculate; palea glabrous or hairy in upper third; anthers 1.5-2.0 mm long.
Plants biennial or perennial, caespitose or loosely caespitose. Culms 15–20 cm high. Glands, when present, multicellular, stalked, on leaf blades, pedicels and glumes. Inflorescences 2–8 cm long; branches glabrous or scaberulous, with nodes villous. Spikelets 3–5 mm long. Glumes exceeding florets; lower glume 3–5 mm long. Lemma: body 2–2.5 mm long, villous; lobes truncate-lacerate, with setae c. 2 mm long and equalling or exserted from glumes; awn 6–7 mm long. Palea linear to lorate, 2–2.5 mm long. Anthers 1.5–2 mm long. Caryopsis c. 1.4 mm long.
Loosely tufted to almost matted, variable perennial, up to 400 mm tall, eglandular or with glandular leaves, pedicels and glumes. Leaves linear, sometimes rolled; ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescence a contracted panicle, 20-80 mm long. Spikelets 6-7 mm long, straw-to purple-coloured, 2-flowered, both bisexual; glumes ± equal, as long as spikelet (excluding awns), 1-nerved; lemma hairy, awns of lobes well exserted, central awn 6-7 mm long, basally twisted; anthers 1.5-2 mm long.
