Characteristics

Erect herbs, scapose, from a basal stock, glandular-hairy on inflorescence. Leaves mostly basal, tomentose with branched hairs. Inflorescence a terminal thyrse, bracteolate; pedicels not articulate. Sepals adnate to ovary to top. Corolla bilabiate, indistinctly auriculate; lobes unequal; corolla pocket short. Stamens free, epigynous. Ovary winged, 2-locular almost to the top; style simple; indusium horizontal, with white bristles on lips; ovules 2-6 per locule. Fruit indehiscent, soft, with 3 large and 2 smaller ±bladdery wings alternating with persistent sepals. Seeds compressed, with a hard aculeate testa; wing narrow.
