Characteristics

Extremely slender plants 6–50 cm high. Culms filiform, erect or spreading, sometimes branched above; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule 0.1–0.2 mm long; blade narrow, 0.6–3 cm long, 0.2–0.4 mm wide, papillose, abaxially glabrous. Inflorescences of 2–6 spikelets; spikelets 5.4–12.6 mm long, cleistogamous. Glumes acute, membranous, smooth, glabrous; lower glume 3.1–5.3 mm long; glume internode 0.3–0.6 mm long; upper glume 5.1–12 mm long. Callus 0.5–1 mm long, covered in hairs. Lemma 2.5–5 mm long (including callus), with margins inrolled, entire, thinly cartilaginous, obscurely nerved; awn 20–45 mm long, straight or curved, entered by several nerves, scabrous, purple. Palea as long as to shortly exceeding the lemma body, entire, membranous, awnless. Anthers 0.15–2 mm long. Caryopsis c. 2 mm long, 0.4 mm wide; margins strongly incurved.
