Characteristics

Very slender annual caespitose plants, bisexual. Leaves: ligule a fringe of hairs; blade short, setaceous, involute. Inflorescence a single raceme or depauperate-paniculate, with few spikelets. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above the glumes and between florets, with a distinctly elongated internode between the glumes, with 2 bisexual florets. Glumes 2, very unequal, awnless, rounded or flattened on back, 5-or 7-nerved; upper glume ±twice the length of lower glume and exceeding the florets. Callus long, pointed. Lemma 1-awned, rounded on back, without a germination flap, 7-nerved, stiffly hairy all over; awn non-geniculate. Palea membranous, 2-keeled, 2-nerved, glabrous. Lodicules hyaline, glabrous. Stamens 2. Caryopsis linear, longitudinally grooved (concavo-convex); hilum long-linear.
