Characteristics

Perennials, caespitose, bisexual. Leaves: ligule a short fringe of hairs; blade once-folded in bud. Inflorescences paniculate. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, with 2–4 bisexual florets, disarticulating horizontally between florets, leading to a short, obtuse, glabrous callus; rachilla prolonged beyond bisexual florets with incomplete florets. Glumes 2, ±equal, awnless, keeled towards apex, 1-, 3-or 7-nerved. Lemma 2-lobed (sometimes almost entirely fused), awnless or mucronate or shortly awned, dorsally rounded, 7-or 9-nerved; awn 1, median, from central sinus, non-geniculate (flat, curved) or geniculate; indumentum short, even (at least in lower part), not in transverse rows, only present on lower half of lemma. Palea relatively long (equalling lemma). Hilum long-linear. Embryo waisted.
