Pogonarthria Stapf

Genus

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae

Characteristics

Tufted annuals or perennials. Leaf-blades linear, flat or loosely convolute; ligule short, densely ciliate. Inflorescence linear-oblong to pyramidal, composed of numerous short stiff slender racemes of crowded spikelets arranged along a central axis; racemes deciduous at maturity. Spikelets several-flowered, laterally compressed, biseriate, disarticulating between the florets or the lemmas falling leaving the persistent paleas on the rhachilla, shortly bearded with stiff hairs beneath the florets at the tip of each rhachilla-internode; glumes 1-nerved, keeled, unequal, shorter than the lemmas, membranous, acuminate; lemmas 3-nerved, with the lateral nerves 1/2–3/4 as long as the lemma, keeled, lanceolate, membranous, glabrous, acuminate or acuminate-aristate. Caryopsis elliptic-oblong to narrowly lanceolate, obtusely trigonous in cross-section.

Inflorescence composed of numerous short stiff slender racemes of crowded spikelets arranged along an elongated central axis; racemes deciduous at maturity, the spikelets biseriate, juvenile at first and completing their growth after emergence.
