Spikelets 2–3-flowered, the second floret male or sterile, the third reduced to an awn, laterally compressed, alternate in 2 rows on a tough axis, shortly pedicellate, disarticulating above the glumes; glumes subequal, 1-nerved, membranous, keeled, as long as the spikelet and enclosing the florets, shortly awned; fertile lemma much shorter than the glumes, membranous, entire and acute at the apex, with a long flexuous terminal awn.
