Perennial with short oblique rhizome; culms up to 50 cm tall, usually erect, with the leaves confined to the lower 1/3; lowermost leaf sheaths densely imbricate, loose, persistent, irregularly splitting; leaf laminas 3–15 cm × 2–6 mm, flat, linear-lanceolate, glaucous, rigid, narrowed at the apex into a hard blunt point.
