Characteristics

Slender climber or hemi-epiphyte with well differentiated adherent climbing shoots and free lateral flowering branches. Leaves: petiole usually exceeding blade in length, lamina-like, oblanceolate, 2–12 cm × 4–14 mm, distally obtuse to truncate to strongly auriculate; blade elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, 1.5–15 cm long, 3–15 mm wide, rounded at base, somewhat acuminate, glossy dark green above. Inflorescence solitary or paired, in axils mostly of distal leaves of flowering branches and subtended by cataphylls; peduncle 2–5 cm long; spadix yellow to purplish, to c. 6 cm long, sessile or more usually distinctly stipitate; spathe ±lanceolate, c. 1.5–4 × 0.5–0.9 cm, wide-opening to reflexed, purple-black to greenish.

Environment

A tropical plant. They grow naturally in the rainforest of NE Queensland and into New South Wales, in Australia. It grows from tropical to warm temperate regions. Adelaide Botanical Gardens. In tropical Queensland it grows from sea level to 1040 m altitude.
