Pteridrys Christensen & Ching

Genus

Pteridophytes > Polypodiales > Tectariaceae

Characteristics

Plants terrestrial, 1-2 m tall. Rhizome creeping, ascending, or erect; rhizome apex and stipe base covered with lanceolate scales; scales brown, 0.8-1.5 cm, margins entire. Fronds close or clustered; stipe light to dark stramineous or brown. Lamina 2-pinnatifid at base, elliptic, oblong, or ovate-lanceolate, widest at or below middle; basal pair of pinnae often largest, lanceolate or broadly lanceolate, basiscopic lobes elongate or not; lateral pinnae not adnate to rachis, ± deeply lobed, with a tooth in each sinus between two lobes; veins free; lamina papery or herbaceous, both surfaces usually glabrous; rachises grooved adaxially, glabrous; costae raised on adaxial surface, glabrous or sometimes with sparse short hairs on adaxial surface. Sori terminal or dorsal on veins, medial, one line on either side of costules; indusia present, persistent or fugacious; perispore consisting of anastomosing wings. n = 41.
More
Caudex short, erect or suberect; scales firm, narrow, entire with cordate base, multicellular hairs present with the scales and variously on the fronds; fronds simple-pinnate; external form of rachis and its relationship to pinnae as in Davallia; pinnae deeply lobed, the lobes ± crenate or dentate; veins all free, once or twice forked, the basal basiscopic vein in each lobe springing from the base of the costule (rarely from the costa), the basiscopic branch of the basal acroscopic vein (or sometimes both branches) passing to a tooth in the sinus between that lobe and the next, the tooth projecting out of the plane of the lamina; unicellular glands absent on the lamina and from sporangium-stalks; sori on the acroscopic branch of each vein terminal or not, indusiate, indusia reniform, sometimes asymmetric.
Terrestrial or lithophytic ferns; rhizome erect, covered by persistent stipe bases. Stipe conspicuously grooved; vascular strands several, small. Fronds suberect, mostly bipinnatisect; pinnae and the apical pinna usually all similar, occasionally the basal pinnae with elongated pinnules (not on Christmas Island); sinuses between pinna lobes with a small, prominent tooth at base; veins all free. Sori circular, small, on lamina beneath, usually at apex of veinlets in lobes; indusium reniform; paraphyses absent.
Vascular bundles in stipes in a simple ring; veins free
