Characteristics

Spikelets 1.6–2 mm long; glumes lanceolate to narrowly ovate, the inferior 1.2–1.4 mm long (including the short awn-point), with just 1 or 2 tubercle-based bristles on the keel, the superior 1.5–2 mm long, with an awn up to c. 1 mm long, and with numerous tubercle-based bristles up to 0.8 mm long; lemma 1–1.3 mm long, elliptic to ovate.

Inflorescence 3–11 cm long, purplish or greyish, the terminal bristle up to 3 cm long; racemes 3–11, 5–15 mm long, erect or ascending, ± their own length apart or less, markedly incurved and distichously arranged on the axis in the form of a sinusoid curve, the terminal bristle 1–6 mm long.
Delicate annual; culms up to 18(40) cm tall, erect, stiff; leaf laminas 1–6.5 cm × 1–1.5 mm, flat or involute on drying.
