Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Iridaceae > Romulea

Characteristics

Plants 20-100 mm high. Corm hemispherical, 8-15 mm diam., obliquely flattened on one side and convex on the other, with crescent-shaped basal ridge as wide as corm, tunics woody, split into parallel fibrils irregularly grouped along ridge. Stem subterranean. Leaves 3 to 6, all basal, narrowly 4-grooved, 0.5-1.0 mm diam. Peduncles 1 to 3, subterranean or shortly exserted, subterete, recurved in fruit; outer bracts submembranous below, green and subherbaceous in distal half, 20-60 mm long, widely striate (3 or 4 veins/mm), inner bracts largely membranous or subherbaceous above, sometimes with wide, colourless membranous margins. Flowers golden-yellow with orange cup often extending onto lower half of tepals, outer tepals often brownish or purplish or striped or feathered on reverse; perianth tube narrowly funnel-shaped, (13-)20-60 mm long, tubular below widening distally; tepals oblanceolate to elliptic, (10-)15-45 x 5-15 mm. Filaments 5-10 mm long, pilose basally or glabrescent, yellow; anthers 5-12 mm long, yellow. Style dividing shortly below or beyond anther apices, branches ± 2 mm long, divided halfway. Capsules ellipsoid, 10-12 mm long.
